Description
Putting on one of the most impressive spring floral displays of any flowering vine, the Blue Chinese Wisteria, Wisteria sinensis, is desired for its abundant 6 to 12 inch long clusters of highly fragrant lavender-blue flowers. The clusters hang straight down from stems along its climbing vines that can grow to 25 feet or more in height, depending on the height of the support structure. That said, Wisteria vines are very long lived, up to 100 years or more, thus can grow to massive lengths if not maintained. For those that don’t mind some occasional pruning, wisteria is a wonderful choice for growing on a sturdy trellis, arbor, pergola, rail or fence. It can also be trained to grow as a highly attractive small to medium size single or multi trunk tree. If you don’t like the thought of pruning you can safely grow this beauty up a large tree with no harm at all to the tree. Simply plant it at the base of the trunk and with a little assistance the vine will be on it’s way up!
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing vigorously to 25 feet or more in height or length, the Blue Chinese Wisteria is ideal for use to grow up and over sturdy arbors, pergolas, and other over head structures that might benefit from the support of a flowering vine. Also nice growing along the tops of fences or rails or up tall columns or posts. Can also be trained to form a highly attractive small tree. As it often does in the wild, this wisteria can be grown up and throughout the branches of large trees without compromising the health of the tree. A fine addition to Asian theme gardens, blue theme gardens and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing:Â 10 feet apart to cover a fence
Growing Preferences
Blue Chinese Wisteria is adaptable to various soil types and thrives in a wide range of pH (4.5-7). We suggest a moist but well-drained soil of average fertility for fastest growth. The vine is happy in full sun or part shade however flowering will be diminished in heavy shade. If needed, prune in late winter to reduce the size. Selective pruning to remove a stray branch can be done any time of year.
