Description
Soft and delicate looking but exceptionally tough, Silver Mound Artemisia is a hardy and long-lived herbaceous perennial that thrives in low-fertility soils, withstands extremely cold or warm temperatures, and will handle all the sun you can give it. The only thing it doesn’t like is wet feet, so make sure the soil drains well! This plant is adored for is eye-catching lacy and glistening silver foliage that compliments plants with darker foliage or bright colored flowers, especially in shades of blue, pink, purple and fuchsia. Forming a tidy rounded cushion to maybe a foot high and 18 inches wide, Silver Mound Artemisia is a perfect fit for smaller garden spaces and is stunning grouped in larger spaces.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing in a cute and tidy cushion to 12 inches tall and maybe 18 inches wide, Silver Mound Artemisia is ideal for use as an accent in smaller garden spaces or as a solo or combined with other plants in container gardens. Excellent contrast and texture plant in groupings in perennial gardens or as a border along paths, walkways or around patios. A fine addition to white theme gardens, herb gardens, rock gardens, Zen gardens and the Xeriscape (low water needs).
Suggested Spacing: 15 inches apart for solid groupings; 3 feet apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Silver Mound Artemisia is very easy to grow in most any well-drained soil of average to low fertility and full to mostly sun. Well-drained soil is a must as this plant does not like wet feet at all. Soggy or waterlogged soil is a killer. Very good drought tolerance when established. Can be trimmed any time during the summer if desired. We cut our plants back to about 6 inches high in winter or early spring so they’ll flush even more fresh new growth. The plant doesn’t require fertilizer but can be fed in spring with a mild plant food such as Espoma Plant-tone.
